My notes on Mavi's tot school moments this week
Date: September 6 – September 10, 2010
We did a of lot of new activities this week, the only problem was that most of the time Mavi wasn’t into it. Nowadays, he seem to be insisting on doing things his own way. Well, that’s fine with me, tot school is all about following your child’s interest and unschooling!
Song for the week:

CRAFTS DAY
Sun
We started the week by doing some free painting using a sponge and a yellow paint. A first he wasn’t comfortable using a sponge since we mostly used a paint brush, but I was able to push him to use it. I showed him how to use it, then he just followed. The only problem I had was that I used a plastic plate, not a paper plate... so the paint didn’t stick on the plate at all! That’s why later on, we just painted on the drawing paper which I provided for him. He was so glued in this activity that he kept asking for “more paint”. I was happy of course that he’s showing interest on painting. He kept telling him that he’s making a face with eyes and nose hehehe I find it so cute that at a very young age, he imagines that he is making a face already!
So this is the end product of our SUN paper craft activity. Read more here.
COLORS/SHAPES/SIZES
Snowman size sorting and Square shape
The following are the things we did in line of our tot school activity for the day:
- sorting sizes of snowman cards
- do some shape matching using his magnetic toys (I just traced the magnetic toys in a cardstock so he can play a matching game)
- play a dancing and exercise game using shape floor-mats. then I also made him match the smaller to the bigger shapes. this activity is good for developing gross motor skills
- reading Dr. Seuss’ Put Me in the Zoo and we proceeded to drawing dogs with spots
- gluing square shapes and matching it to the right color
- sorting colors using dyed pasta
- discussing the SQUARE shapes as seen on the house and car and building
LETTER: BIG LETTER S
S is for STAR
We made this STAR letter craft and it was a hit! Read about it here.
I also wanted to incorporate pre-writing activities every Wednesday so here’s what we did for pre-writing:
- I put tempera paint on a plastic, sealed it and taped it on the desk so he can practice writing letters, shapes and numbers on it using a cotton bud.
- I also tried using flour for pre-writing but he ended up playing with it and covered himself with the flour. He loved playing with the flour so much! The dining was surely a mess!
NUMBERS
Snowman clipping/counting cards
Mavi wasn’t in the mood to do any activity on this day, so we only did a few activities.
I got these number cards from Confessions of a Homeschooler. In order not to overwhelm him, I only gave him numbers 1 to 3 counting cards. The idea here is to practice counting. Since he can recognize numbers 1 to 13, I wanted to focus more on the counting part. For now, I’m focusing on counting 1 to 3.. then to 5.. and so on and so forth.
But I still aim that he can recognize numbers from 1 to 20. These days, he can count from 1 to 13... and from there he’ll keep on saying “thirteen.. thirteen... nineteen, twenty”.
FINE/GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
Some of the skills we practiced this week:
- opening and close containers. he loves this activity! this was in line with our video for the week “Elmo’s World Word of Opposites”. his favorite was blue container of his spoon and fork. he also loves my sunglass pouch. the rest he didn’t show much interest. he hated my red jewelry box because his hand was stuck when the box snapped
- he did a pretty good job with sorting at first but later on when he got bored he just started to put the pasta randomly
- pasta fit was an activity I got from the internet. it’s the same as fitting sticks on a hole but instead we used a pasta. he loves this activity because he can later on shake the plastic bottle and create a sound.
For our sensory, I made him play on the ice. He enjoyed this activity so much! He sat there for around 30 minutes!
