Lesson 4: Week 2

Here are my notes on Mavi's homeschooling for 14 months - Lesson 4, Week 2.
Date: November 20 - November 26, 2009
Curriculum Source:  Letter of the Week
(This and other resources for homeschooling will added on my sidebar widget. I don't proof read, so pardon me if I don't have correct grammar hehehe.  I write this on-the-fly kasi.)

This is the first time that I started proper homeschooling activities for Maverick. Though I have exposed him to reading books and other educational toys since birth, I haven't really thought of making it this serious.

So what pushed me to actually start this program.  For Mavi to be a genius??!! Definitely not!!Genius people are not normal hehehe. They don't live a normal life, don't have happy childhood because they spend their time mostly on studying hahaha.

Kidding aside, I am homeschooling Mavi to make use of my time, to be more productive, to practice the thing that I love doing.. that is teaching, to stimulate Maverick's brain helping him learn and discover things.. to teach him how to listen, to focus on the things I am teaching him.  I want him to acquire this abilities as early as possible.

So without further ado, here's what we did for this week.

LITERATURE

This week we read Little Duckling.  The book has a rhythmic text and a groove that can be traced by a child's finger.  What I like about this book is that it has huge pictures of animals! I love books with large and bright pictures because Mavi loves looking at pictures and I noticed that Mavi learns easily through them.  So we read this book EVERYDAY.  As in. Over and over, hanggang sumakit na ang aking lalamunan. Mavi loves to read it to him again and again,  malalaman mo un kasi pagsinabi mong "Okay, I'm going to close the book now. Bye bye book", he'll get furious.  Kaya I have to read it again, till he gives the signal to stop.

I read him books in the morning to start his day after having breakfast.  Then read it to him again in the afternoon. If I see him holding and reading the book by himself, kinukuha ko sa kanya at binabasa ko yun habang sya'y nakikinig.

CHIDREN'S SONG OF THE WEEK

The song for this week is THE FARMER IN THE DELL. I would play this music in the background while Mavi and I are playing. He likes this song, because he would dance when he hears it. This is how I would know if Mavi appreciates a song, if he would dance with it or not or if he would laugh while listening and be so giddy about it.  Minsan, may kasama ring head-banging.  So those are the cues na gustong gusto nya ang music.  If he likes the music, I will play it over over (babies love repetitions). This explains the LSS.

SIGN LANGUAGE
This week, I taught Mavi how to do the BUTTERFLY sign. I'm using the one hand sign, flapping my hands in the air, while singing the FLY FLY FLY THE BUTTERFLY. He finds it funny, but later on tried following me. Now, he's a little bit confused with doing BYE BYE and BUTTERFLY. I think I needed to change my sign language of butterfly.

I do the sign randomly, during breakfast time, during nappy change, or when we're just sitting and watching the news. If I gave him a signal to do it with me, he would mimic the action rapidly then would immediately stop. I don't know if he's just to o shy to do it or he just doesn't want to impress his Mom because his Mommy will kiss and hug him hehhe. He's not comfortable if I'm doing these stuff to him.

FUN ACTIVITIES/TOY TIME
I usually schedule the "activity" time in the morning after reading then in the afternoon, pag nagising na sya after his nap.  So basically the activity would include the "toy time" , that's allowing  him to play on his own using his toys, sometimes with a little guidance, then some brain activities as well.

Where's the Cookie?

The aim of this activity is to enhance memory and concentration.

I used 2 blue hallow blocks.  I have been introducing him to blue colors, that's why all the blocks he has been playing with are in blue colors.  He can now utter "blue blue" but he still can't understand what that means.  That's okay,he's only 14 months old.  At least he can say the blue word.

Back to the cookie game.  I placed a small cookie on one of the blocks and would show him two blocks.  The aim is for him to find which block did I put the cookie.  I would demonstrate how and on which block I placed the cookie, then scramble the two blocks.  During the first day, he went wild!!  He thought that I wasn't giving him the cookie.  So he  threw everything!! Hahaha.  The second day, this time, since he's a little bit familiar with the activity he was more calm.  Though he wasn't attentive when I was showing him where I put the cookie.  So every time I ask him where's the cookie, he'll open both blocks.  Well, that's an improvement, compared to throwing it all. Each day, he improves.  Now, he knows how to find for the cookie.  Though he still misses a lot.  But that's okay.

I plan to continue this activity till he knows how to listen and concentrate on where I put the cookie so he could find it.

Stacking Game
This game enhances hand-eye coordination, and teaches a child visual-spatial relationships.

We would play this game while eating breakfast.  Oh yes, same as with Where's the Cookie.  My husband bought these stackable blocks.  The only problem with these blocks is that they are so heavy.  Hindi sya kayang buhatin ni Mavi ng isang kamay lang.  So I've been helping Mavi to stack the two blocks (there are 3 blocks, pero masyadong mataas pag tatlo), guiding his hands on how to raise and nest the blocks.  In this activity, he pays attention.  I think he likes it.  Then, if I told him to do it on his own, he would follow.  Kaso, hindi nya na sastack ng maiigi ang mga blocks kasi mabigat nga. We will try to get a more easier stackable toys for him.  Pang 2 years old ata itong blocks na ito.

House Chores :-)
Need I say more? Not only enhancing his brain and skills, but this activity will teach him how to clean and help Mommy with the chores and other responsibilities.

Husband has taught him not to throw his toys around, but put them or return them in the container. And here he is, doing that.  I was surprise when I saw him one day, returning his toys in the bag so I told husband about it.  Then he said, he taught Mavi how to do it.  Good hubby :-)

VIDEO TIME
I would use this video time as means for me to the bathroom and take a bath, cook, wash the dishes and bottles and everything that is non-Mavi related chores.  This one is a life saver.  Mavi loves Barney and Sesame Street videos because he enjoys the singing and the dancing part.  Most of the time, he would laugh along with the monsters and the kids.

Here's  Mavi's all time favorite video:  Sesame Street Let's Make Music featuring Stomp

NATURE STUDY
Nothing beats the beauty of nature, I needed to show Maverick how wonderful our world so he could appreciate the simple things in life, appreciate God's creation.  So this activity is just as simple as going outside, and enjoy the refreshing air and mother nature.

For this week, we went to the park to study the leaves.. autumn leaves!! Hehehe, tuwang tuwa ang bata! Ang daming dahon kasi.Kaya ayun, hindi nya alam pano mag simula.Takot sya nung una gumalaw ng dahon, pero pinakita ko sa kanya how to pick them up and crunch them.

These leaves are not that dirty naman, kakahulog lang nila sa kahoy.

MUSICAL EXPLORATION

This is just a pure fun activity for Mavi.  Since we've been watching Let's Make Music, the objective of this activity is to create music using anything.  So I gave him his shoe box and a plastic water container, and a plastic bottle thong.  I would show him how to beat music first, then he would follow.  He easily gets bored with this activity.  Dahil siguro nakakapagod.

OUTDOOR GAMES

Babies learn so much from playing.  We are so lucky that there are lots of playground in Belgrade, so it's so easy to have outdoor games with our little boy. So for this activity, we just exposed him to the playground, the slide, the swings and seesaws.  We don't have lots of playground in Bacolod, meron lang sa McDo and the mall, but I think mas best ang outdoor playgrounds like these. Especially pag malamig hehehe.

So there you go, Lesson 4 Week 2.  I am currently preparing for Lesson 5.
