My notes on Mavi's tot school moments this week
Date: October 4 – October 8, 2010
Mavi is 25 months old.
This has been a productive week. I was surprise at Mavi being so cooperative and in the mood to do most of our activities. I also added new activities for him so he won’t get bored with the usual things that we do.
CRAFT DAY
Volcano
We made a volcano paper craft. It was not an exciting activity for him.
But, our science experiment using the infamous baking soda + vinegar volcano was a hit!! I added some food coloring so that it can produce a reddish eruption. My son kept asking for more, unfortunately, I didn’t have enough vinegar :(
COLORS AND SHAPES
Heart
- We danced and used our shape playmats
- Mavi practiced using the glue-stick. I made use of our scratch papers for this activity. I cut out heart shapes and made him glue them on a violet colored paper.
- I cut out different sizes of heart shapes from my adhesive paper. Then I divided one page of a coloring book into half and told him that we will stick the heart stickers according to sizes. I instructed him to stick the “small” heart on the right side and the “big” heart on the left side. I think that this is a good way of recognizing sizes and plus the fact that he can practice his “sticking” skills. The good thing about using our coloring book is that I was able to preserve the hears and from time to time we review the heart sizes once again.
- We sort colors using my cut-out shapes from a cardstock and paper plates with colors on it. The idea here is to match the colors of each shapes with that on the paper plates. I gave him blue and green first, but he seemed pretty bored and finished the activity quickly. So I gave him 4 colors to match: orange, blue, pink and green. Each time he picks a shape, I would first describe it as “pink square”, “green circle”... then I would ask him to follow me. Surprisingly, he described most of the shapes by himself, linking the colors to the shapes.
- We also play the heart puzzles I got from Confession of a Homeschooler.
LETTER OF THE WEEK
Big Letter V
For our letter craft, we made a flower vase! He loves this activity so much! Read about it here.
(This activity is from No Time for Flashcards)
I gave him a alphabet puzzle to play with while I’m taking my rest. It was a hit!
I also gave him back his puzzle which I bought a long long time ago. That time, he doesn’t know what to do with it yet. But now, he’s pretty adept in putting the pieces together. I am really amazed on how fast he can match one puzzle to the other. My husband believes that since I’ve been giving our son a lot of “shape” matching and puzzle activities, his brain can easily process puzzles :)
NUMBERS/MATH
- We did a lot of counting using our flashcards. This time I showed him the cards from 11 to 20. Although he recognizes the numbers but he still get confused by the names of the number symbol. He knows the numbers 11 to 13, but he sometimes interchange the names of 14 and 15.
- More on counting using our pasta and egg carton box.
- Stamping/marking and counting activity which he loves to do. During this activity he started to trace the magnetic numbers that we have. I might give this activity to him in the future (tracing and stencils).
MONTESSORI ACTIVITIES
Beading/Lacing
I only used the penne colored pasta for this activity. For the nth time, my son doesn’t show any interest in beading. He gets the job done, but after a two pasta laced on a shoe lace or straw, he starts to get bored.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
Playskool Shape Sorter
It’s been a while since we played with this toy. So to make use of it, we used it as a stamping material for our painting activity. He love the stamping activity because my son likes shapes, but the problem is on the tempera paint. He doesn’t like using them because it sticks and stains on his hand (of course the paints are washable, he just doesn’t like getting dirty).
