Since purchasing the book "How Smart Is Your Baby", I've been a very busy Mom. See the picture below? That's Maverick's Wall. It is located on his bed, placed at a right angle to provide visual stimulation every waking moment.
Based on the book:
The objective of these checkerboards with images is to stimulate, establish, improve or reinfornce the baby's ability to appreciate detail configuration within a configuration.
So one day, I went to a local school supply store and bought several materials for this mini project. Materials include: 4 checkerboard, paste, tape, and a ETL book for the pictures.
Each picture on the ETL is 11x11 inches already so I don't have to create a separate black and white boards, less the measuring and cutting of squares.
- First I put a tape on all sides of the boards to protect the sides.
- I then attached the two boards to create a much larger area. I used two sided tape for this. Thus two larger boards were created.
- Selected and cut out the images on the ETL books. I made sure that the images that will be placed on the checkerboards are simple ones, so that the little one can appreciate it better. Don't try to use complicated/sophisticated pictures. Babies cannot yet appreciate them, they can't even appreciate pastel colors yet.
- After painstakingly pasting all the pictures on the black area, I placed the boards on the corner of our bed. Overall the result was alright. As long as Maverick can see the images on the black and white contrast.
So now, every day, during waking moment and before we retire for bedtime, I made sure that Mavi sees the pictures and he totally loves it! He even talks to them!
Here's how I use this board:
If baby is on the floor in the living room, they should be placed on the wall near to him. The checkerboard will provide baby with a contrast of black and white that he can actually begin to see. A white wall or pastel color wall does not provide any contrast and it is hard for baby to see. Point the pictures to you little one, describe the picture in one word (make sure you say it in clear loud voice) and it's color.
Total cost=340PHP. Now, you don't need to have high tech or expensive baby toys to educate your baby. All you need is a little creativity and resourcefulness! And of course... a loving and a full-time working Mommy!
Now, my next task is to set up his playpen which I am so excited to show the world!
