Last year I started to introduce the Card and Counters of Montessori to Mavi. He wasn’t interested at that time, so I have to discontinue it and for the fact that I don’t have enough counters.
Last month, he’s been obsessing on counting objects. So I decided to give him back the number and counters activity. It was also at that time that I already bought some bear counters for him, and purchased dozens of buttons in Bacolod.
To know how this activity works, read here.
I made these number cards way back in Belgrade. The only problem with this one is that it lacks number 10. So I made another one which includes the number 10 and zero. This way, I can illustrate to Mavi the concept of a “zero”. And I also used buttons as counters.
I realized that it’s good to keep a variety of number cards and counters as kids gets easily bored with one medium. I wanted to add more counters in the future as he gets so interested with this “counting” activity. I saw a lot of potential “counters” at Daiso and Spotlight this week but I still have to save for them.
At first he doesn’t want to participate in the activity. He just watched me doing the whole thing and little by little started to join me with counting. But he still refused to sit beside me and do the activity together.
A few days later, I saw him doing the activity all by himself. It’s a good thing I was able to capture it. He picked three number cards (in random), and started counting the bears. Although he didn’t do it in a “Montessori” way, at least he was able to pick up the concept of the whole activity and enjoys the fun of counting!
