Toddler Beginnings Week 7

My notes on Mavi's homeschooling for Week 7
Date:  May 26 - May 2, 2010
Source:  Bright Beaming Resources

I've been preoccupied with my personal work this month so I wasn't able to prepare as much materials for our learning. Even so, I tried to put as much effort for my boy each day for his homeschool.  You see, our activity each day is only around 30 to 45 minutes in the morning, and 1 hour in the afternoon.  That's the longest time the boy could spend on an activity, either by studying letters, numbers etc.  Much less if he already knows the topic.  Then another 15 minutes for reading.

But I tell you, the preparations of materials and planning the curriculum for homeschool are the ones that consume much of my time.  Mostly, I work all of these at night, when the boy is asleep and it keeps till the wee hours in the morning just cutting papers, printing, organizing materials per week etc.

That's the reason why, for this month of May, I only had 2 themes.  Once we're done with week 10, homeschooling will take a break so I will have enough time to prepare my materials for the next 10 weeks.

Theme: Star | Vocabulary: Twinkle| Shape: Star | Letter: G  | Number: 7 | Nursery Rhyme: Wee Willie Winkie

MONDAY
Theme: Star
Vocabulary Word: Twinkle

I cut out different sizes of stars from a yellow stickers and made him paste it on a black colored paper.  He liked this activity and keeps on shouting "stars" "stars"!

He's also improving with his "sticking" skills.  I like that he got so interested in it, because before he loathe this activity.  Then when I started buying him the bubble stickers, that was the time he got interested in stickers.  He loves it because it's thick and he can hold it properly, unlike paper-thin.  Now, even with just a plain sticker, he loves to play with it.

He get so used of me, putting our materials on the learning wall... so this is what he did after he he's done with his activity.  He tried posting it on the wall as well.

It's so nice that I get to take pictures and document it.  Hopefully, when he's old enough to read and appreciate, he can view this site and see his works of art!

Songs played this week:
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
  • Star Light Star Bright

TUESDAY
Shape: Star

Instead of teaching him the shape of Star (which he already knew by the way), I just took out the rest of the shapes:  Square, Diamond, Triangle and Star, and made him work on it on the form fitter.  I was so surprise that he can remember them all and even say the names of each shape correctly.

After this, since we will be having a break from homeschool, I will try to assess the activities so that for the next coming weeks, I will be able to come up with more ideas for teaching.

WEDNESDAY
Letter: G

As I mentioned on my previous post,  I wanted to improve our letter activities.  What I did for this week was made him tracing paper and do-a-dot for the letter G.

THURSDAY
Number: 7 , Seven

I ran out of ideas how to do about with number 7 so I just printed it out in a piece of paper and made him stick seven stickers on the paper.  He cannot pronounce the word "seven" yet.

Will try to visit a bookshop this weekend and look for books about numbers.  Gosh! It's really hard to look for English books here!

FRIDAY
Nursery Rhyme: Wee Willie Winkie
This is Maverick's favorite poem, and the first one he can actually recite!!  So it basically needs no introduction to him.  My husband told me that this was his favorite rhyme as well when he was young.

Okay, so he's that good in spooning yet so I moved to another activity which is the "pouring".

I really wanted to start with water, but I don't think I have the energy to mop the floor once we're done so I just gave him pasta twist to pour.

I gave him these toys, three cups and a pitcher.  I demonstrated to him at first hour to pour, but here's what he did with the cups, he pretended to drink something from it.

When I tried to correct him, he fussed and keeps on doing his thing.  He doesn't want to be disturb at first, so I just allowed him to play with the cups on his own.

When he was bored already and showed signs that he wanted to have an activity, that was the time I showed him again how to pour the pasta from the pitcher to each cup.

Okay, I got his attention and now he keeps on saying "pour" "pour" and "cup" "cup" and enjoyed pouring the pasta not only on the small cups but on his table as well.

We will still have the same activity on our next homeschool, so I hope to see some improvements.

I am also looking forward to give him  tot trays once we end with Week 10.  He'll be old enough by then to get serious with the activities and will give me enough time for now to prepare for the materials.

Since we were blessed with a good weather, we went to our favorite park and play with bubbles!!  He even wanted to make the bubbles himself, but he kept on sticking the bubble-maker on his mouth.

Oh he just loves to chase them!

Last time, he played with the sand and pebbles, now here he is interested with the flowers and the green grass.
