Toddler Beginnings Week 6

My notes on Mavi's homeschooling for Week 6
Date:  April 12 - 16, 2010
Source:  Bright Beaming Resources

Theme: Rainbow| Vocabulary: Prism | Color: Red | Letter: F  | Number: 6 | Nursery Rhyme: The Little Nut Tree
Finally, I was able to give Mavi the RAINBOW theme. You see, rainbow is a common natural occurrence that appears mostly in children's books and songs. So to give the RAINBOW justice, it needs a grand introduction.

MONDAY
Theme: Rainbow
Vocabulary Word: Prism
RAINBOW theme was introduced using a picture, songs, and watching children's videos with rainbows.  Aside from this, I also drew a rainbow for him to color.

He can manage to say "ah-boooww" referring to rainbow, but cannot quite pronounce the "r" yet.

Another interesting thing that we did was form a rainbow using the PlayDoh.  I made use of the blue, green and red colors because these are the colors that he has learned already.

To document my homeschooling better, I decided to post the videos that Mavi and I watched for each theme.  What I do here is go to Youtube and search for a video or songs related to our theme.  Then I would pick from a bunch of selections a two or three videos or songs.  I only let him watch the video when I do chores or working.
Here are the videos for this week.

1.  Rainbow Song.  Mavi loves to dance with this song.  Too bad it's a little bit short.

2.  Meo's Rainbow.  This is my favorite.  It's a beautiful song with pleasant melody.  Currently, I am looking for the lyrics so I can sing this to Mavi even if we are done with this theme.

TUESDAY
Color: Red
For this week's color, I gave him the red crayon and told him to color the triangle (the shape that we learned last week).  Oh yes, he already understands "color" or "draw".  Every time I would mention those words, he would start looking for his coloring books or crayons.

He didn't entirely color the shape, he just tap the crayon on the paper, resulting to small dots on the triangle.
Coloring the triangle with RED crayon
He kept on saying "red" everytime he taps the crayon.

Since I have introduced green, blue and red, I was thinking that maybe it's time to give him a "color matching" activity.  A few weeks ago, I made these color matching cards to teach him how to pair one object to another with their colors.

The pictures were taken randomly via Google image, but I alter several pictures to make it look simpler.

Matching color cards
He was very happy when I gave him these materials.  At first I showed him each picture.  He fell in love with the heart shape.  He calls it "harnt".  But before I could start showing him how to match the colors, he grabbed the heart shape from me and ran around the house shouting "harnt".

Interested with the heart shape

Loves the heart so much!
When he finally settled, I taught him how to match the colors having different shape/pictures. The result?? He couldn't get it yet.  He just kept on saying the names of the pictures, but could not relate each via their colors. So I guess, it's a long process.  I don't worry much, I have the time in the world when it comes to him!

He placed on our kitchen floor
That afternoon, the heart shapes were missing from my cards, then I discovered it at the kitchen floor.

WEDNESDAY
Letter: F

Handpainting the letter F
Instead of coloring the letter, this week I made him paint the letter F.  He knows the whole alphabet already so I just review the letters to him every week.  I am still planning what to do with the rest of the letters, how to improve our activity, how to present it to him in a different way to add a little fun.  I'm beginning to get bored with the letters since he can already recognize them.

The good news about it though is that, every now and then, he recites the alphabets or sing the alphabet song!

Expert
Before, he used to scratch the watercolors, now he knows how to use it properly... that is dipping his fingers gently on the color and use the color to paint the letter.
Using his left and right hand to paint
WEDNESDAY
Number:  6
I like introducing numbers to him because I can be very creative at this one.  For this week, I made apple cards for our counting lessons.  I printed it on a red paper and placed a number on it so he can recognize the number when we count.

Just like his love for letters, he also likes to count.  Seen on the pictures, he would pause on every number whenever we count and would look at it attentively.

And of course, there's the sticking activity. He's so good at it now.

My materials for counting
He accomplished all the six red stickers by himself, makes me proud!  Now, I would just instruct him to paste it..but I still need to peel it off from the paper first.

FRIDAY
Nursery Rhyme: Humpty Dumpty
For this week's rhyme, I just recited it to him during bath or nappy time.

THE LEARNING WALL
Here's our learning wall.  Mavi played with the number six, that's why there are only four stickers left on the number.
Week 6 Learning Wall

Rainbow collage
Since our theme was rainbow, I centered our learning activity on it. Mavi and I made this rainbow collage.  I made the outline, and torn out colored pieces of paper for our collage.  I put some glue on the rainbow and told him to "paste" the colored papers on the drawing.  I pointed to him where to paste, giving him one cut-out paper at a time.

He got pretty tired when on the yellow color so I finished the rest of the work.

Playing with his Daddy
One of the thing that Mavi loves to do when we're at the park is to chase the birds.

Mommy showing the water fountains
The little guy is a little bit scared of fountains.  So we took him one time to Terazje where there's a gigantic water fountain which started running a few weeks ago.  He keeps on shouting "utter" but he's quite reluctant to show how amazed he was because he was too scared hehe.  Look closely on the picture, look at how stiff he was.
